WHAT'S IT LIKE TO WORK ON A FARM??

Welcome to my work blog!

So, after some thought, I decided to start a work blog!! Over the years, friends and family seem pretty impressed upon telling them about the farm where I work. A lot of them seem shocked at the actual size of the nursery, and the quanity of product we crank out in a season. So why not keep a daily journal of what goes on here?

The end of another shipping season!

The farm is near completed for winterizing!  Things look like a ghost town around the farm, now that everything is covered!

Some of the production crew covering the last of exposed plants.

Everything covered with a blanket of snow....

Brrrr!!!  Checking the fields for fallen signage.

A small hoophouse filled with perennials.
Until next year.... goodbye farm!

change of season

It's that time of year again!  Fall brings about lots of preparation for overwintering on our farm!  And so we begin to get ready....

Hundreds of hoops and wood await to be assembled into overwintering greenhouses, or "hoophouses".  These greenhouses will be built, covered in plastic, and will store plants in which have a harder time overwintering without some form of protection.

Bails of Sudan grass lined up... this will be used to cover our container plants once they are consolidated together and tipped.

A crew of production workers cutting our perennials.  We cut back all of our perennials in the fall, along with some of of our shrubs.

Miscanthus grass cut back.  Some are untrimmed to ship to customers with orders this fall yet.

Some of our plants are covered in plastic as well as Sudan.  Piles of plastic standing by and waiting.

Unique markings

A new variety added to our inventory this year; Berb thun Admiration.  I especially like this variety because of its unusual variegation around the outer leaf edges.  A real eye catcher!

Construction under way

We're putting up 4 new greenhouses!  This will allow us to overwinter some of our perennials, and give them a "head start" on the perennials that are left in the field to overwinter.  So far, two of the "skeleton" frames are put together.
